Artists Born This Month: Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein was born this month on October 27, 1923 and was one of the major artists in the pop art movement. Coming on the scene in the early 1960’s, Lichtenstein used bold outlines and the primary colors of red, yellow and blue, which became his signature style. He painted images taken from commercial art, advertisements and especially the comics, meticulously painting them with Ben-Day dots, to make them appear to be from a commercial press; printed from newspapers. At the time, the prevailing style in the art world was Abstract Expressionism. Lichtenstein brought commercial art into the gallery setting although it was considered taboo at the time.
