Ask a Gallerist: What art should I buy?
What art should I buy?
It is rare that new art buyers are purchasing for investment, though that may be the case for folks who have very high incomes, but are newly exposed to the world of art. It is most often suggested, “Buy what you like”. Is this a piece I would like to keep forever? Will I enjoy it in two years, twenty years?
The purpose of art is to give the owner pleasure, make a statement, perhaps create a memory. Ask why do I like this piece? Is it the image itself, the color, the lines, the style, is it funny will it in some way enhance my space? Does it make a statement about me, who I am or how I feel? Sometimes a very small piece, a scene that would just fit on a table is perfect or a big abstract with splashes of color would be a welcoming sight as one comes in the door after a long day of work. BUY WHAT YOU LIKE!
