Ask A Gallerist: Will my art go up in value?

Will my art go up in value? Should I buy art as an investment?
The pieces one purchases may go up in value, but if it simply holds it's value or purchase price, that is a good thing. The quality of the work, credentials of artist, and wide recognition for their skill are all part of assessing value. When an artist is aging and one recognizes there will be fewer pieces around that may increase price. Of course, if one is looking for high end investment pieces, follow the provenance. Who is the artist, where has the work been, how has it been acknowledged, where has it been shown, has the artists work been in museums even regional ones. Is the information about the artist and the work verified. Do the research!
