Can a Cup of Coffee Change Your Day?

A cup of coffee is just a cup of coffee.
At least, that’s what most of us think.
Most mornings, we pour it, drink it, and move on to the next thing on the list. We rarely stop long enough to notice it. The warmth in our hands. The steam rising from the mug. The rich color. The smell that somehow tells us a new day has begun before we’ve even taken the first sip.
The coffee itself hasn’t changed. We have.
One of the ideas behind Art as Lifestyle is that so much of what makes life beautiful isn’t missing from our lives. It’s simply become familiar. Familiar things have a way of becoming invisible. We stop noticing them, and eventually we stop appreciating them.
I don’t believe we need extraordinary experiences every day to live extraordinary lives. Sometimes we just need to see ordinary things with fresh eyes.
That cup of coffee may remind you to slow down for five minutes before the day rushes in. It may become an opportunity to thank God for another morning. It may prompt a conversation with your spouse, a quiet moment on the porch, or simply a chance to breathe. None of those things cost anything, but all of them have the power to change the direction of a day.
Seeing differently isn’t about pretending everything is wonderful. Life can be difficult. We all know that. It’s about refusing to let the pressure of life blind us to the gifts that are already there.
So tomorrow morning, before you take that first sip, pause for just a moment. Look at the cup. Notice it. Be thankful for it. Then ask yourself a simple question:
What else have I stopped seeing?
Because sometimes a cup of coffee isn’t just a cup of coffee. Sometimes it’s an invitation to begin seeing your life again.
